In Jenison This October, Baldwin Street Holds Both the Detours and the Calendar

"The roundabout at the intersection of 48th Avenue and Baldwin Street is still under construction, and that intersection remains closed to all traffic."

That line comes from the September 29, 2026 progress report posted by Prein & Newhof, the engineering firm on Georgetown Charter Township's 48th Avenue transmission main project. It was posted the day before October started. The Ottawa County Road Commission's project page gives the roundabout a window of July 27 to October 17, 2026. Those two dates are close together, but they mean different things, and the difference matters for October in Jenison.

Here's why. Baldwin Street has a closed intersection at its west end, resurfacing scheduled on its east stretch, and the library and township office in the middle. Those two buildings carry most of the month's community events. If you're planning October here, you're planning around Baldwin.

October 17 is the end of a window, not a reopening date

The Road Commission's dates describe when the project is scheduled to run. The engineer's weekly reports describe what has actually happened. They point to a longer finish.

On August 14, Prein & Newhof wrote that the roundabout contractor would start once the water main inside the intersection passed testing, and that "it is anticipated that roads will be fully reopened by the end of October." So the firm's own forecast already ran past October 17. Georgetown Township's spring newsletter gave a later date still, expecting the overlapping work around 48th Avenue, Tyler Street and Baldwin Street to wrap up in mid-November.

The September 29 report lists the work still to do on 48th Avenue in order:

  1. Finish testing the water main. Most of it has been installed in 48th Avenue.
  2. Make the final water main connections once testing is done.
  3. Rebuild and pave the last stretch of roadway outside the roundabout.
  4. Finish the roundabout, which is still under construction.

The report gives no new reopening date. Until one appears, the realistic assumption for October is the one in the report itself. 48th Avenue stays closed to through traffic from Port Sheldon Street to Baldwin Street, the Baldwin intersection stays closed from every direction, and through traffic follows the posted detour signs.

Some of the work there is already done. Crews paved the top layer of 48th Avenue in early September, from Port Sheldon Street to just north of Oak Lane Drive, and driveways along that section got their final layer of asphalt too. That stretch is finished but still closed to through traffic. The August 31 report said plainly that "the road closures will remain in place even after paving." If you see fresh blacktop near Oak Lane Drive, the road isn't open yet.

A few practical points from the same reports:

  • Local traffic for Sutherland Springs Condominium should turn onto 48th Avenue from Port Sheldon Street.
  • 48th Avenue is closed to through traffic but open to local traffic and businesses. That includes N. Schut Greenhouses at 6830 48th Avenue, a landmark the paving updates use to mark where work starts and stops. If you're heading there, come up from Port Sheldon Street and call ahead to confirm hours.
  • The reports say police are monitoring the site so that only people who live or work on the road use it.

The other end of Baldwin starts its own project this week

The second project on Baldwin is scheduled to begin the week of September 28. Road Commission contractors are tentatively expected to start resurfacing Baldwin Street between 20th Avenue and Cottonwood Drive that week, with work expected to last through late October. Unlike 48th Avenue, this stretch stays open. Traffic moves through temporary lane closures, and the notice warns drivers to expect delays. The county also says all of this work depends on the weather and that completion dates may change.

That puts both projects on Baldwin at once for most of October. One end has a full closure with an uncertain finish, and the other has lane closures through about Halloween.

One project is done, and one is still unconfirmed

Some work from this summer is already finished. The Road Commission's project tracker lists the 12th Avenue bridge rehabilitation over Rush Creek, between Port Sheldon Street and Chicago Drive, as "Completed," with project dates of May 26 to August 18, 2026. That's about two weeks ahead of the county's original estimate of August 31 and well ahead of the township newsletter's "on or before October 2."

The park courts aren't confirmed yet. Georgetown Township's project at Maplewood Park and Rush Creek Park adds new pickleball courts and upgrades the tennis and basketball courts, along with seating, fencing and shaded areas. The township contract totals about $855,024, which is $797,659.08 for construction and $57,365 for engineering. When FOX 17 covered the plan in April, township superintendent Justin Stadt said residents had asked for pickleball. "Pickleball has been in demand in the community, and we've had a lot of residents reach out and ask for that type of improvement," he said. The forecast at the time was completion "around October." As of the end of September, we haven't found a township announcement that the courts are open, so check before you take your paddles.

The month's calendar is at 1515 and 1525 Baldwin

The closure at 48th Avenue changes how you get places. It doesn't change where things are happening. Most of Jenison's dated October events are at two neighboring addresses on Baldwin Street, the Georgetown Township office at 1515 and the Georgetown Township Public Library at 1525.

Date Event Where
Thu., Oct. 1, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Conversations about Jenison History, led by the Jenison Historical Association. Registration required. Library, Meeting Room AB
Sat., Oct. 3, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Community Costume Giveaway, while supplies last Library, Children's Program Room
Tue., Oct. 6, 6–8 p.m. Master Plan open house to review the draft and give feedback Township office board room, 1515 Baldwin St
Tue., Oct. 13, 6–7:30 p.m. DIY Terrarium workshop, $5 Library, Children's Program Room
Thu., Oct. 15, 6–7:30 p.m. Author event with Gary D. Schmidt Library, Lower Level Program Room
Fri., Oct. 23, 6–8 p.m. Fall Fest with Ridgewood CRC: games, crafts, pumpkin decorating, Trunk or Treat Library, 1525 Baldwin St

Two of these come with logistics. For Fall Fest, the library asks visitors to park next door at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. The Master Plan open house on October 6 lands while 48th Avenue is closed and Baldwin is scheduled for resurfacing. It's the township's scheduled chance for residents to look at the draft plan in person and comment on it.

The costume giveaway on October 3 also ties into the rest of the month. It comes three weeks before the trunk-or-treat events at the end of October.

The rest of the month is spread around town

Fall Fest isn't the only trunk-or-treat that weekend. The Learning Experience–Jenison, at 7763 Cottonwood Drive, holds a family Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and costumes are encouraged. On Saturday, October 24, Jenison Christian Church at 7003 28th Avenue has one from 3 to 5 p.m., with popcorn, cider and free pumpkins while they last.

Friday the 23rd is busy beyond trunk-or-treats. Jenison Center for the Arts has a Gospel Quartet Night at 7 p.m. that evening, but the ticket page showed it sold out when we checked.

Hager Park, at 8212 28th Avenue, changes its hours partway through the month. Ottawa County keeps it open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. through October 15, then from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. starting October 16. Entry is free, and the park has trails, picnic facilities and the Age of Discovery playground. If you take an after-dinner walk there, the park now closes two hours earlier.

Post Family Farm's 2026 fall season runs Monday through Saturday from September 12 to November 7. Hours are noon to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, with pumpkin picking, wagon rides, a corn maze, animals and bonfires. The farm is closed Sundays, and its season ends about a week after Halloween.

Road work is also scheduled to end around late October. Baldwin's resurfacing is set to finish about the same week as the trunk-or-treats, and the roundabout's own engineer forecast the end of October back in August. The engineer's next weekly progress report is the most reliable place to see whether 48th and Baldwin opens before November.

Road timelines like these also matter beyond your commute. A closed intersection or a newly finished road can change how a street feels to live on.
